dear value

We use patents as a visual symbol to represent the social construction of claiming ideas. A patent is a license that grants the right to exclude others from making, using, or selling an idea or invention-but ideas are inherently an act of imitation. We create new things on top of existing things through transformations and variations. The interdependence of old and new ideas has been obscured by powerful cultural ideas, and technology is now exposing this connection. New automated generative processes such as the GPT-3 seamlessly and continuously create "new" content on a production line. We are struggling ethically, legally, and artistically to come to terms with these implications. The growing dominance of the market economy, where the products of our intellectual labor are bought and sold, has caused us to become territorial about the ideas we claim as our own. We begin to claim ideas as a form of property.
